Keith Urban embarked on a unique musical journey with his latest album, “Flow State,” surprising fans with a departure from his traditional country sound. This unexpected shift featured an original track with Michael McDonald and a collection of ten iconic yacht rock covers. The term “yacht rock” refers to the soft rock genre popular in the late ’70s and early ’80s, including hits like “Baby Come Back” and “Just the Two of Us.”

Despite raising eyebrows with this unexpected pivot, Urban’s creative process for “Flow State” was organic and full of spontaneity. The singer-songwriter ventured into uncharted territory by reviving the former Tracking Room studio in Nashville, which he renamed The Sound. Collaborating with producer Dann Huff and a team of talented musicians, Urban recorded two yacht rock songs in one day, sparking a series of inspired recording sessions that culminated in a full-length album.

During the recording process, Urban’s main focus was on capturing the essence of yacht rock while infusing the tracks with his distinctive style. He aimed to pay homage to the original songs without sacrificing artistic integrity, creating a delicate balance between authenticity and innovation. The album’s extended outros provided a canvas for experimentation, allowing Urban to put his unique spin on classic tunes.

Urban’s collaborations with artists like Little Big Town and John Mayer added depth and dimension to the album, breathing new life into iconic tracks. The sole original song on “Flow State,” titled “We Go Back,” features a heartfelt narrative about love and reunion. Written in collaboration with BRELAND, Sam Sumser, and Sean Small, the track exemplifies Urban’s ability to blend nostalgia with contemporary storytelling.

In an interview, Urban expressed his belief that the music on “Flow State” serves as a form of escapism and comfort during turbulent times. The album’s uplifting melodies and infectious charm offer a respite from the divisive climate of the world, resonating with listeners in 2026 as much as they did decades ago. For Urban, this project represents a personal journey of rediscovery and artistic growth, showcasing his versatility as a musician.

With “Flow State,” Keith Urban has demonstrated his willingness to take creative risks and explore new musical horizons. This album marks a significant departure from his country roots, inviting listeners on a nostalgic yet innovative musical voyage. Urban’s passion for music and dedication to authenticity shine through in every track, making “Flow State” a testament to his enduring artistry and evolution as an artist.
