The Highest Payments Musicians Have Received for Their Catalogs
Rock stars in the 2020s are experiencing a fascinating trend of cashing in on their back catalogs like never before. In the past, musicians earned significant portions of their wealth through various channels such as radio play, film and television placements, single and album sales, and later through downloads and streaming revenue. However, the recent jaw-dropping sums are going to those who own the catalogs of the artists’ compositions, primarily the individuals or companies holding the publishing rights.
Multiple affluent music rights organizations have been acquiring lucrative catalogs of both rock and pop stars, paying exorbitant amounts ranging from tens to hundreds of millions based on the stature and appeal of the artist relinquishing their life’s work. Some artists have not only sold the rights to their songs but also the masters of their famous recordings. Here are some of the eye-watering sums paid to secure the rights to the catalogs of some of music’s biggest stars, ranging from the $200 million range to over $1 billion.
Daddy Yankee, a Puerto Rican musician who played a crucial role in popularizing reggaeton, which is a genre of Latin music in the 21st century, has proven his impact. With several chart-topping songs like “Gasolina” and “Despacito,” Daddy Yankee has amassed six songs with over a billion plays on Spotify alone. Concord, a music management company, offered him a package deal in 2024, acquiring the publishing and recording rights to his work from 2002 to 2019 for a whopping $217 million.
Another notable artist who has seen substantial success is Katy Perry, who began her career as a backup singer before achieving massive solo stardom. Perry has dominated the charts, landing 11 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and releasing multi-platinum albums like “Teenage Dream.” Despite facing challenges in her career, Perry cashed in while her catalog was still valuable, selling her publishing rights and masters for her albums from 2008 to 2020 to Litmus Music for $225 million.
Jason Aldean, a prominent figure in country music, has made his mark on the genre with numerous chart-topping hits since 2005. His success has led to a consistent presence on the country charts and notable success in crossing over to the pop genre. In 2025, Bertelsmann’s music publishing division, BMG, secured the rights to Aldean’s nine album catalog, recorded between 2005 and 2019, in a deal worth $250 million, marking the largest such deal in the company’s history.
The purchasing and selling of music catalogs have become an increasingly lucrative trend in the music industry. As artists look to capitalize on their work, music rights agencies are willing to pay staggering amounts to secure the rights to their catalogs, leading to some significant paydays for the musicians involved.
