La Sécurité’s “Bingo!” is the art-punk party album your weekend needs

When my colleague, Ryan Leas, attended Pop Montréal a few years ago, he returned with stories of La Sécurité, a band he described as a mysterious art-punk group with hints of Devo’s quirky charm. Now, this Francophone collective is making waves with their latest release, Bingo!, which is their second full-length album. I couldn’t let the week go by without sharing my enthusiasm for this record.

Upon listening to Bingo!, I can detect the enigmatic quality that Ryan mentioned, with elements of no wave and shoegaze interwoven with Félix Bélisle’s powerful bass lines. However, above all, this album is a sheer delight to experience. Tracks like “Deny” transport me back to the heyday of Le Tigre and the dance-punk scene, while songs like “Detour” evoke the avant-garde elegance of late ’70s and early ’80s Britain. Fans of bands such as Telehealth and Vessel, who infuse their post-punk sound with the infectious energy of B-52s, will undoubtedly find themselves drawn to this record. Take a listen.
