Sha Ray and DJ Haram reveal details of upcoming album “Critical Thot,” share two tracks for preview
If accolades were given for creative album titles, rapper Sha Ray from the Bay Area and producer DJ Haram from New York would undoubtedly need more shelf space. This week, the duo is set to unveil their collaborative album, Critical Thot, which boasts one of the most intriguing titles in recent memory. Alongside the enticing title, the two artists have also shared two impressive new tracks.
Hailing from New Jersey, DJ Haram is known for her bold and innovative music that transcends genre boundaries. She is half of the duo 700 Bliss with Moor Mother and has produced intense tracks for artists like Armand Hammer. In the past year, she released her album Beside Myself, featuring Sha Ray on the track “Fishnets.” Sha Ray and DJ Haram had been admirers of each other’s work for some time before meeting in person. They came together after Sha Ray traveled to see DJ Haram perform in Los Angeles while opening for Armand Hammer. The collaborative album, Critical Thot, was recorded remotely with both artists co-producing it. In the Bandcamp description, Sha Ray explains:
“My focus as a rapper lies in exploring the themes of misogyny and sexuality in my music. Critical Thot serves as a contemplation of unapologetic feminine authority while also delving into the complexities of self-objectification and the commodification of sexuality. This record delves deeply into the concept of power within feminine sexuality as a dynamic and ever-evolving entity that is inherently imperfect. Despite its imperfections, it is a power that I possess and intend to wield.”
