Ambitious Commitments Showcased in “Cocoon” Music Video

Sweeping Promises’ track “Cocoon” has a significant history behind it. Initially crafted to elongate their live performances when their song repertoire was limited, it evolved into a fundamental piece for the band. After going through various refinements in the studio, musicians Caufield Schnug and Lira Mondal landed on a version that perfectly encapsulated the essence of their “live sound” approach, fitting seamlessly into their album, “You Say I Romanticize.” A music video, collaboratively produced by Shawn Brackbill and the band, cleverly juxtaposes live concert footage from the Kansas community with visual imagery of a cocoon enveloping Mondal.

Introducing itself after the album’s opening track, “Shooting Shadows,” “Cocoon” precedes the release of “You Say I Romanticize,” scheduled to hit the shelves on August 14 via Sub Pop. Crafted meticulously over an 18-month period at the duo’s dual-purpose tour house and studio in Lawrence, Kansas, the album was meticulously constructed using a unique chamber-recording technique, focusing on creating a deliberate wall of sound. Subsequently, drummer Spenser Gralla was tasked with reproducing the songs identically to how the band performed them live, resulting in their most intense and frenzied record to date.

Sweeping Promises’ music video succeeded in blending grassroots live performance footage from their local Kansas community with the symbolic and thought-provoking imagery of a cocoon slowly enveloping Mondal. As the band explains, “The music video intercuts homegrown live footage of the band playing shows in the Kansas community with the sculptural and psychogeographic idea of the cocoon, which entices and finally envelops our singer, Lira Mondal.”

The band’s North American headline tour, spanning from September to November, includes a recently announced hometown gig in Lawrence. Fans can secure their copy of the upcoming album by pre-ordering the Loser Edition on Black and Yellow Confetti vinyl (NA) or Magenta (UK/EU).
