During the twenty-fourth edition of the Azkena Rock Festival, Robert Finley once again displayed his talent for taking the stage and making everything else disappear. It’s not just his voice, one of the best in the genre today, but the way he embodies each song, as if he is imparting essential knowledge to you, even if you didn’t ask for it.

As one of Dan Auerbach’s proteges under his Easy Eye Sound label, Finley will be the opening act for The Black Keys’ only show in Spain at the Movistar Arena in Madrid on September 13. When someone like Auerbach decides to support an artist who until recently worked in a furniture factory and performed in prisons because it was the only place his music couldn’t escape from, it speaks volumes.

Finley’s music is a convergence of raw blues, southern soul, label-less rock, and unexpected glimpses of gospel. But above all, it sounds genuine because Finley isn’t playing a role. He is himself. This authenticity transforms his concerts into more than just a list of songs.
