Tim Bowness and Butterfly Mind Collaborate with Bruce Soord and Jon Sykes on New Project
Bruce Soord and Jon Sykes, the talented duo from Pineapple Thief, opened the night with an unplugged set that gradually transitioned into a more electrifying performance as Bruce picked up his electric guitar. While I had been a fan of Pineapple Thief years ago, I was unfamiliar with their set that evening. The addition of drums on a backing track gave their sound a heavier edge, taking the audience on a musical journey that alternated between rockier numbers and quieter, more introspective pieces. The standout moment came with the near-epic performance of “Ghosts In The Park” from Bruce’s latest album.
As the audience took a moment to recharge and chat, the headliners, Tim Bowness & the Butterfly Mind, took the stage with their original lineup, including the return of Andy Edwards on drums. Tim Bowness, known for his exceptional songwriting, radiated confidence and energy throughout the performance, setting the tone for a dynamic and engaging set. The band kicked off with the unreleased track “No Fires Lit Here” and seamlessly transitioned into live favorites like “Time Travel In Texas” and “Sweetheart Raw,” accompanied by Jon Jowitt on bass.
Tim Bowness paused between songs to engage with the audience, injecting humor and personality into his performance. The setlist featured a variety of tracks, including selections from his collaboration with no-man, offering a well-rounded and captivating experience for fans. Matt Stevens delivered Fripp-styled guitar riffs on “Rainmark,” while Andy Edwards unleashed a wild drum solo that captivated the crowd. The encore included the crowd-pleasing “Lost/Not Lost” and a “punk” rendition of “Time Travel In Texas” as a nod to the iconic venue’s punk past.
The energy and enthusiasm of the band resonated with the audience, creating a memorable and engaging show that left a lasting impression. With top-notch musicianship and a diverse setlist, Tim Bowness & the Butterfly Mind delivered a performance that celebrated both their musical legacy and their future endeavors. As the night came to a close, the band remained on stage for an encore, ensuring that the audience’s enthusiasm continued until the final note. Overall, it was a jolly good gig that showcased the talent and artistry of Tim Bowness and his band, leaving fans eagerly anticipating their next performance.
