Hokumon Shrine’s Annual Grand Festival in Wakkanai City – Domingo
The annual Hokumon Shrine Festival, celebrating Japan’s northernmost guardian shrine, takes place every year from July 4th to July 6th. The festival marks the beginning of the northern summer with approximately 250 stalls set up around the central arcade. The main hall of the shrine hosts performing arts dedications, and a grand parade featuring the main portable shrine carried by various companies and organizations winds through Wakkanai City. Neighbourhood associations also participate by bringing their own portable shrines, and students from Wakkanai City perform in a lively music parade, adding to the festive atmosphere.
The festival kicks off on the 4th with the Yoimiya Festival, featuring traditional performing arts like Nanchu Soran within the Hokumon Shrine grounds. The following day, the main festival showcases a majestic portable shrine procession that moves from the Hokumon Shrine through the city. A highlight of the event is when the portable shrine rushes up the shrine’s stairs in a powerful and awe-inspiring moment upon its return. The festivities continue on the 6th with a maritime safety prayer festival conducted by the bottom trawlers. The Gozabune, a sacred boat carrying the portable shrine, leads a prayer for safety and a plentiful catch at Esandomari Fishing Port in Noshappu, with Tairyobata, or big catch flags, raised.
The fishing boats at Wakkanai Port also raise their Tairyobata, adding to the lively atmosphere of the festival.
The Hokumon Shrine serves as the venue for this grand celebration, and the event is organized by the Wakkanai City government. Visitors are advised to check the official website of the organizer for any updates or changes to the event’s schedule.
From traditional performances and shrine processions to prayers for safety and prosperity, the Hokumon Shrine Festival offers a vibrant and culturally rich experience for both locals and visitors alike. This annual gathering not only honors the guardian shrine but also brings the community together in a spirit of celebration and unity.
