Audience takes center stage at festival.
The Sejong Bohemian Stage took place at the Sejong Arts Center from the 27th to the 28th, hosting the 2026 Sejong Bohemian Stage as part of the Sejong Bohemian Music Festival. This event marked the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Sejong City Culture and Tourism Foundation and the 5th anniversary of the festival itself. The festival offered a unique experience by breaking the traditional boundaries of a concert hall and inviting the audience to be part of the stage.
One attendee expressed their surprise at being able to view a performance from backstage, stating, “I’ve been to a lot of festivals, but I didn’t expect to do a slam backstage.” The Sejong Bohemian Stage made history as the first festival in Korea to introduce a 360-degree stage by opening up the backstage of an indoor concert hall. This innovative setup featured a seating area on one side and a standing zone on the other, allowing the audience to actively engage with the performances.
On the first day of the festival, artists like Lee Seung-yoon, Cardi, Short Stories, and Moments electrified the stage with rock and indie performances. The following day, acts such as Kim Chang-wan Band, Baek Hyun-jin, Shin In-ryu, and Jisokuri Club carried on the legacy with performances that spanned across generations. The standout feature of these performances was the immersive experience created for the audience, who became integral to the show. Instead of facing a single direction, the audience faced each other, resulting in interactive and dynamic performances.
Attendees from different age groups, including families with children and elderly individuals, all found enjoyment in the festival. The coexistence of the standing zone and seating area allowed for a diverse range of audience members to engage with the festival in their own way. Festival organizer Kim Nam-sun emphasized the importance of giving the audience a sense of ownership and collaboration in creating the stage together.
Outside of the concert hall, various activities enriched the festival experience. Three teams from the Sejong Music Creation Center, “Muse Sejong,” performed in the lobby free of charge, attracting not only festival-goers but also passersby. Collaboration with local small business owners ensured that attendees could savor local cuisine at the F&B booths. Additionally, the festival offered a range of audience convenience services, including free storage, mobile phone charging, stroller rentals, and women’s goods.
One visitor, Park Soo-min, noted the festival’s affordability and convenience, stating, “The food here is cheap and there are many free services, so it was less burdensome.” This level of care and attention to audience comfort is made possible by the festival’s unique production process. Unlike most festivals that outsource planning and operations, the Sejong Bohemian Festival and Stage are wholly produced by the Sejong Foundation for Culture and Tourism, ensuring a cohesive and audience-focused experience.
Overall, the Sejong Bohemian Stage serves as a testament to Sejong’s cultural vibrancy and serves as a magnet for attracting visitors from across the region. With its innovative staging, diverse performances, and audience-centered operation, the festival continues to captivate attendees and solidify its reputation as a premier cultural event.
