The inspiration for “96 Year Old Girl” struck Da Costa during a night of indulgence, as he recalls, “I wrote and recorded this song one night after getting really high, ordering Dominos, and watching Terminator 2.” The track’s vocal melody in the verses is a nod to the musical concept known as ‘the lick,’ a motif prevalent in jazz music that has gained its own meme status. On the other hand, the chorus was a lingering idea that Da Costa had toyed with for years before finding its rightful place in this song.
The intriguing title of the single stemmed from a conversation with Brendan Sepe, a member of the Los Angeles noise rock band Semi Trucks. Da Costa elaborates, “The title came via Brendan Sepe of the venerable LA noise rock band Semi Trucks. He was describing helping a girl move out of her house. He then mentioned that she was 96 years old. I just thought it was so funny that he would describe a 96 year old woman as a girl.”
