British singer-songwriter Wesley Stace, known as John Wesley Harding, is preparing for the release of what he hints could be his final album, “One Last Heist.” The album is set to drop on September 2 on various formats, including 12-inch LP vinyl, CD, digital download, and streaming services through Pravda Records.

Recorded at Studio 1935 in Philadelphia’s historic BOK Building, the album marks Stace’s collaboration with longtime musical partner David Nagler. The ensemble, including Eddie Carlson on bass and renowned drummer Stéphane San Juan, developed a sound blending Stace’s signature storytelling with a rich musical backdrop featuring guitars by Joe Gore and Justin Mazer. Additional depth was added by Patrick Berkery on drums and backing vocals by Chris von Sneidern, along with a sprinkle of strings, clarinets, and horns from various friends.

Unhappy with the constraints imposed by the pandemic during the recording of his previous album, “Late Style,” Stace was eager to break free. The vision for “One Last Heist” was clear – to arrange the songs meticulously before recording them live in the studio, capturing the essence of a band truly playing together in the moment. The result is a refreshingly groovy, melodious, and dramatic departure from Stace’s folk-rock roots, heavily influenced by the soulful tones of the Philadelphia music scene.

Stace’s lyrics are as diverse as ever, spanning from enigmatic stories to social commentary, and personal reflections. Songs range from the mysterious tale of a visionary presenting work to a scientific panel in “This Knowledge Dies with Me” to the humorous yet pointed protest in “I Say Lots of Things,” and the timeless theme of love in “In Our Own Time.” The crescendo of the album is marked by the track “Hello Dead Horse,” which tells the story of a band reuniting for a final paycheck, bringing the musical narrative to an intriguing full circle.

Born in Hastings, Sussex, in 1965, Stace has established a significant musical and literary career. He has released multiple albums, four novels, and has been a staple of the New York City music scene with his variety show, Cabinet of Wonders. The show has attracted notable names in the entertainment industry and serves as a platform for talented performers, writers, and comedians.

Throughout his career, Stace’s music has been featured in films and TV shows, and his songs have been covered by various artists. Not confined to music, Stace has ventured into literature, with his novels garnering critical acclaim. He has also taught songwriting and creative writing at prestigious universities and contributed to several reputable publications.

Having recently become an American citizen, Stace remains an active figure in the Philadelphia music scene, where his artistic journey reflects the vibrant essence of the city. As he gears up for what could possibly be his final musical offering, Stace showcases his evolution as an artist and storyteller, leaving fans intrigued about the legacy he may leave behind.
