That Winter Fest alt-rock festival expands to two cities for 2026 event

Originally established in Johannesburg, this independent festival has expanded its reach to include both Cape Town and Johannesburg, showcasing some of the most thrilling punk, garage, psych, and alternative rock acts over two weekends.

What started as a grassroots partnership between Boogy Central, an indie promoter, and venue Sognage, has blossomed into one of the underground music scene’s most highly-anticipated winter events. This year’s festival is set to be bigger than ever before, featuring multi-stage line-ups and programming that celebrates the diverse subculture of alternative music.

“We’re really excited about the growth of the event and decided to go all out this year with two stages,” says Jethro Lock from Boogy Central. The festival kicks off in Johannesburg at Sognage this Saturday, promising an expanded experience that includes a mini skate ramp and a demonstration by local skateboarder Marci Rodrigues, highlighting the festival’s DIY spirit and connection to skate culture.

The line-up for That Winter Fest includes established favorites like Desmond and the Tutus and The Tazers alongside emerging acts like Necklace, showcasing the wide range of South Africa’s punk and alternative rock communities. Cape Town will host the festival on July 17th, transforming District and Surfa Rosa into a dual venue celebration of the city’s heavier sounds.

Headliners for the festival include BEAST, Ruff Majik, Runaway Nuns, and Darc, with additional performances from bands like Mouse and Droniac. Attendees can look forward to food vendors, band merchandise, and an outdoor chill area, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience throughout the night.
