Brooklyn Whisper Doll creates dreamy track “Bluebells”
A fragrant breeze of impromptu fancy surrounds the otherworldly path that was influenced by Tagami’s recent transition from a “sterile East Village apartment” to a lively showcase house nestled in a tranquil residential enclave of South Brooklyn.
Reflecting on her transition, Tagami reminisces about her spacious, sunlit room adorned with vines and intricate wooden features. She found the space saturated with history and the essence of its former occupants, radiating with potential and new beginnings. The environment sparked a newfound appreciation for the positive aspects of life, allowing her thoughts to wander freely and explore uncharted opportunities.
Whisper Doll first emerged as a personal project during Tagami’s teenage years in Atlanta, where she crafted songs reminiscent of Mazzy Star and The Cranberries in the comfort of her bedroom. Relocating to New York City in 2024 and unveiling her debut album, Perfume Garden, led her to connect with her future bandmates, including drummer Shawn Majeed, guitarist Maya Lagman, and bassist Julia Chrzanowski. The band’s upcoming album Lucky Clover, set for release on 2 October through Take Care Records, signifies a collective endeavor that introduces Whisper Doll’s dreamy pop-inspired sound to the world.
“We’ve always been a self-sufficient live-performance group, although I’ve typically recorded in professional studios,” Tagami reveals. By collaborating with VHS Studios in Dumbo, Brooklyn, and producer Oscar Compo’s personal studio, Whisper Doll’s acoustic prototypes have undergone a transformative process to culminate in their latest musical offering. Departing from the fast-paced ambiance of the metropolitan city, the melodic synths within the new album transport listeners to a realm of optimism and lighthearted reverie.
Having accumulated valuable experience from years of live performances and tours, Tagami eagerly anticipates the unfolding of this new chapter. Nonetheless, she remains enchanted by the memory of her former bedroom, where she was struck with the vision of bluebells encroaching through her windows in a dream. In the midst of her storytelling, her faithful feline companion Lucky lounges beside her, a fateful reminder of the serendipitous encounter that led to his adoption from a nearby convenience store upon her arrival at the show house. It is this harmonious blend of fortuitous events that has inspired Tagami to embrace a newfound sense of hopefulness and gratitude towards life.
