The newest offering from the band gash, “at least you know what you’re laughing at” builds upon their previous EP and album releases, embodying the most comprehensive representation of the band’s essence. This album serves as a platform for exploring reflections on trauma through the lens of rage. The lead single “good and bad” gives listeners a taste of what to expect from this collection of songs, accompanied by a visual presentation directed by Kyle Scherber.

Kyle, a visual artist and recent graduate from UWEC who relocated to Minneapolis, was instrumental in bringing the video concept to life. His involvement in Eau Claire’s DIY scene, working on visuals for local shows and DJ-ing house events, made him a natural choice for the project. The band was drawn to Kyle’s increasing ambition and creativity and was excited to see how he would interpret gash’s music through his unique perspective.

The genesis of the album began with digital compositions that gash started crafting after a self-booked tour in 2025. Featuring vocals by Breckelle Bathke, guitar by Mitchell Smuhl, drums by Eric Simmons, and bass by Ricky Christensen, gash merges their noisy-rock sensibilities with a digital flair. They incorporate samples from band founder Logan Nyberg’s digitized home videos, ushering in a new era for gash’s sound.

In the upcoming week, gash will hit the road for a headline tour, making stops in Austin, Dallas, and Oklahoma City. The tour will culminate in a hometown performance at Bon Iver’s Eaux Claires Festival, showcasing their latest musical endeavors to a diverse audience.

The album’s artwork and tracklist provide a glimpse into the themes and tone of “at least you know what you’re laughing at.” With tracks like “godded,” “risking heaven,” “professional,” “holiday time,” “eyelids,” “data master,” and the title track, gash invites listeners into a sonic journey that explores the complexities of trauma and the cathartic release of expressing it through music.
