80s Rock Band Absolute Grey Set to Drop Live Album
Absolute Grey, an underground 80s rock band, recently announced their return with the release of a live album titled “Live at CBGB’s,” featuring 10 unreleased tracks from a 1985 show. The band, originally from Rochester, had a sound reminiscent of R.E.M. and Jefferson Airplane, blending psychedelic and jangle pop influences that contributed to the new wave movement’s rising popularity. The group comprised singer Beth Brown, guitarist Matt Kitchen, bassist Mitchell Rasor, and drummer Pat Thomas, who emphasized guitars, organic songwriting, and human authenticity over keyboards, sampling, and drum machines.
Absolute Grey deliberately stayed underground, performing mostly with local bands and shunning mainstream attention. They shared the stage with other local acts like Dream Syndicate, Rain Parade, 3 O’Clock, and Long Ryders, garnering media coverage through college fanzines, obscure radio stations, and live gigs. Their distinct sound set them apart in the evolving music scene, opting for a raw, guitar-driven approach amid the dominance of synth pop and hair metal.
The band’s career saw three studio albums and one EP release, with lineup changes along the way. Their first live album, “A Journey Through The Past,” showcased rare recordings available only in Greece, supplemented with bonus content. Despite disbanding in 1990, they marked their 20th anniversary in 2004 with a special album commemorating their debut release, “Green House.”
CBGB, a celebrated venue in the East Village, hosted numerous iconic acts like The Ramones, Dead Boys, Blondie, Talking Heads, and Patti Smith, among others. Absolute Grey also graced its stage, making their upcoming live album release all the more significant. Pre-orders for the album in CD format, paired with a complimentary poster, are now open ahead of the August 7 launch date.
Absolute Grey’s refusal to conform to mainstream trends, unwavering dedication to live performances, and distinctive sound have left a lasting impact on the music industry. Their upcoming live album promises to reignite interest in their unique blend of new wave, punk, and psychedelic rock, appealing to both longtime fans and new listeners exploring the rich tapestry of 80s underground music.
