Global XTC fans fund new tribute for iconic rock band
A punk rock band that achieved global recognition in the 1970s has been commemorated with a new piece of artwork in their hometown of Swindon. XTC, the band famous for popular songs like Making Plans for Nigel and Senses Working Overtime, have maintained a devoted fan base worldwide, despite not touring since the 1980s. The unveiling of the XhibitA sculpture in Queen’s Park on Saturday was made possible by the efforts of dedicated fans Mike Smith and Graham Carter, who launched a successful fundraising campaign.
Former band member and drummer Terry Chambers expressed his gratitude at being remembered after so many years, describing the experience as “humbling” and “something I never imagined.” Mike Smith, one of the key figures behind the artwork, praised XTC, likening them to legendary acts like The Beatles and highlighting their influence on numerous other musicians. Reflecting on the band’s evolution over time, Smith noted, “They had some great songs with great lyrics, which have only continued to get better over the years.”
The decision to create a lasting tribute to XTC stemmed from the absence of a permanent memorial honoring the band’s significant contributions to music. Fans from countries as far-flung as Japan, Australia, and the US expressed their support for the project, contributing donations that far exceeded the initial fundraising target of £4,500. Ultimately, around 120 individuals gathered for the unveiling of the 2-meter high sculpture, crafted from steel and featuring imagery inspired by XTC’s iconic 1979 album Drums and Wires, as well as their distinctive logo.
Terry Chambers, reflecting on the enduring appeal of XTC’s music, expressed surprise at the band’s continued popularity. “When you put it together, you think, you might get a couple of years out of it as most bands come and go,” he remarked. Nevertheless, he is flattered by the ongoing appreciation for their work. The event was a testament to the lasting impact of XTC on music lovers worldwide, showcasing the enduring legacy of a band that made its mark on the industry.
