Slash and Springsteen to Share Tales of Sunset Marquis, Famed Rock Star Hotspot
An upcoming documentary is in the works to bring to light the hidden tales of the Sunset Marquis Hotel, a haven for rock stars in West Hollywood for over six decades. This documentary, titled “If These Walls Could Rock,” is directed by Tyler Measom and Craig A. Williams and will feature interviews with iconic musicians like Bruce Springsteen, Ringo Starr, Slash, Cyndi Lauper, Morrissey, Sheryl Crow, Darius Rucker, Nancy Wilson, and Dave Grohl.
The Sunset Marquis, founded by George Rosenthal, served as a retreat for rock stars in the 1960s, where they checked in, partied, and left their mark on music history. Set to be released on August 14, the film promises to uncover the stories of wild nights, impromptu concerts by the pool, and secretive adventures in hidden corners of the hotel. Even the trailer, narrated by Billy Bob Thornton, hints at the intriguing and debaucherous tales that took place within these sacred walls.
In a statement provided to Rolling Stone, Cyndi Lauper reminisced about the Sunset Marquis, referring to it as her “home away from home.” She highlighted that beyond the hotel’s reputation as a rock ‘n roll hotspot, it was a peaceful and beautiful sanctuary for her. Lauper emphasized the importance of having a place to unwind and rejuvenate after the chaos of performances and studio sessions, crediting the hotel staff for making her feel understood and valued.
Nancy Wilson and Slash, fellow Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees, shared their own memories of the Marquis. Wilson fondly remembered how the hotel staff never complained about the numerous towels ruined by her colorful hair dye experiments. Slash, on the other hand, acknowledged the hotel’s transformation from a place of debauchery to a meaningful meeting spot for him over the years, despite triggering nostalgic flashbacks of past antics in the bathroom.
Apart from shining a light on the rock stars who frequented the Sunset Marquis, the documentary also aims to explore the journey of George Rosenthal and his son Mark. Mark played a crucial role in saving the hotel from decline as the music scene changed and the Marquis faced neglect. Directors Measom and Williams emphasized that George’s role in founding the hotel and Mark’s efforts to revive it added a deeply emotional and human element to the film, solidifying their father-son relationship as a central theme.
Through firsthand accounts and insider stories, “If These Walls Could Rock” will transport audiences back in time to the era of rock ‘n roll excess and creativity at the Sunset Marquis. The film promises to capture the essence of this iconic hotel and its pivotal role in shaping music history, from the perspectives of the rock legends who graced its halls.
