Simple Minds still rock Atlanta, despite city mix-up
Simple Minds, a Scottish band from the 1980s, had an interesting journey with their hit song “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” for the film “The Breakfast Club.” Initially hesitant to record someone else’s song, the band’s rendition added their unique sound, making it a surprise hit that reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 over 40 years ago.
The band’s recent concert at the Synovus Bank Amphitheater at Chastain Park in Atlanta brought fans back to their teen years. Attendees sported T-shirts of other iconic New Wave bands, creating a nostalgic atmosphere. Frontman Jim Kerr’s performance included a drawn-out audience sing-along of “Don’t You,” followed by playful banter and interactive moments with the crowd.
Despite his occasional mix-up of calling Atlanta “Athens” during the show, Kerr’s energy and vocal prowess shone throughout the 105-minute set. The band’s long and successful career was showcased in a high-energy performance, with hits like “Glittering Prize” and a standout duet with backup singer Sarah Wilson “Once Upon a Time.” Kerr’s gaffe regarding the city name added a humorous touch to the night, highlighting his connection with the audience.
Unlike some of their peers, Simple Minds’ success in the United States didn’t match their UK popularity, which included 24 top 40 hits. However, the band closed out the show with fan-favorites like “See the Light,” “All the Things She Said,” “Alive and Kicking,” and “Sanctify Yourself.” The addition of fellow British bands Modern English and Soft Cell to the lineup allowed for a memorable night of 80s classics in front of a large audience, indicative of the enduring legacy of New Wave music.
