In a recent appearance on Apple Music’s Fire in the Booth series, Will Smith seemed to direct some pointed lyrics towards longtime rival Chris Rock. The renowned rapper and actor seemed to allude to their infamous altercation at the 2022 Oscars without directly mentioning Rock by name. Smith’s freestyle included lines like, “If you talking crazy out your face up on the stage and disrespect me on the stage, expect me on the stage,” indicating his sentiments towards the comedian. He further emphasized the theme of facing consequences for one’s actions with lines such as, “Jokers dish it out, cry foul when its time to take it / City full of real ones, wasn’t raised to fake it.”

While Chris Rock has not responded to these lyrics, this is not the first time Smith has addressed the incident. On his recently released comeback album, “Based on a True Story,” the opening track features DJ Jazzy Jeff and B. Simone in a barbershop-style conversation where Smith touches on various topics, including the Oscars incident. Lines like, “I heard he won the Oscar but he had to give it back – and you know they only made him do that shit because he’s Black,” and, “He’s only still relevant because of his kids,” suggest a deeper commentary on the events surrounding the altercation.

Additionally, Smith’s album delves into personal matters, with references to his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. In the song “You Lookin’ For Me?” he raps, “Personal life with my wife – mind your business, it’s complicated,” hinting at the complexities in his relationship with his spouse. Smith’s decision to address personal and public matters on his album reflects his commitment to authenticity and storytelling, as he shared in a recent interview.

During an interview on Sway in the Morning, Smith disclosed that he sought guidance from JAY-Z and Kendrick Lamar before working on his album. Jay-Z’s advice to “be true to your story” resonated with Smith, leading to the album’s title, “Based on a True Story.” This emphasis on authenticity and sharing one’s truth has driven Smith’s creative process and musical endeavors.

While Smith’s freestyle may have sparked speculation and interest in his ongoing feud with Chris Rock, the underlying message of authenticity and staying true to one’s narrative shines through in his music. As Smith continues to navigate his career and personal life in the public eye, his commitment to honesty and storytelling remains at the core of his artistic expression.
