Florence + The Machine has returned with a new single and an official announcement about their upcoming album, Everybody Scream. The news was first shared on Florence Welch’s social media, following a teaser video of the vocalist screaming into an empty field. Now, the title track has been released along with a music video, providing fans with more insight into the project.

The album, Everybody Scream, is set to be released on October 31, a fitting date for an album steeped in mysticism and witchcraft, according to Welch. Following up on their previous album, Dance Fever, which was released in 2022, Everybody Scream was born out of a period of healing, self-discovery, and recovery from a life-threatening surgery.

In 2023, Florence + The Machine had to cancel several festival appearances due to Welch undergoing emergency surgery. Welch later shared on social media that the surgery had saved her life. Over the past couple of years, Welch has been diligently working on Everybody Scream, collaborating with artists like IDLES guitarist Mark Bowen, Mitski, and The National’s Aaron Dessner. The album consists of 12 tracks that explore themes of womanhood, death, aging, and mythology, and is now available for pre-order.

During an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Florence Welch discussed the inspiration behind Everybody Scream. She opened up about her fear of releasing new music and the underlying reasons for that fear. The new single, in particular, delves into the fear of vulnerability and the internal struggle to share one’s art with the world.

According to Welch, Everybody Scream is her most personal album to date, intertwining personal narratives with mythological elements. She described the album as a world she had to construct around her most intimate emotions and stories. Welch also hinted at a recurring motif of screaming throughout the album, inspired by the cathartic act of celebratory screaming.

Explaining her creative process, Welch mentioned how she drew inspiration from a playlist titled ‘Songs to Scream Along To,’ questioning what it means to scream alone in solitude. Despite the intense emotions and vulnerability conveyed through the album, Welch humorously mentioned the distinction between her creative space and her ‘cry corner,’ emphasizing the balance between introspection and artistic expression.

Overall, Everybody Scream promises to be a captivating and introspective journey for Florence + The Machine fans, delving into themes of vulnerability, strength, and the inherent human desire for connection and artistry. With Welch’s fearless approach to self-expression and storytelling, the album is sure to resonate with audiences around the world.
