Boz Scaggs is set to make a return this October with the release of his latest studio album, Detour, after a seven-year hiatus. Slated to drop on October 17 under Concord Records, the new record from the Grammy-winning singer and guitarist follows his previous album, Out of the Blues, released in 2018, and showcases his signature blend of finesse, soulfulness, and subtlety.

To give fans a taste of what’s to come, Scaggs has unveiled a reimagined version of “I’ll Be Long Gone,” originally featured on his debut self-titled album back in 1969. The fresh take on this fan favorite presents a matured rendition of the track, as Scaggs’s evolved voice and musical style breathe new life into the classic tune.

Speaking about the album, Scaggs reveals that the process initially began as a casual exploration of music he has always enjoyed, with no intention of making a record. The informal gatherings with pianist Seth Asarnow gradually evolved into something more profound, leading to the creation of Detour. The recording sessions captured an intimate and high-level musicality that demanded a wider audience, serving as the foundation for the album.

Detour comprises 11 tracks that traverse the Great American Songbook, delving into both well-known classics and hidden gems from the likes of Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Irma Thomas, and Lonnie Johnson. The album’s title reflects the spontaneous nature of the project and Scaggs’s belief that the most rewarding paths often unfold unexpectedly.

Among the standout tracks on the album is “I’ll Be Long Gone,” a nod to the 1969 original recorded in Muscle Shoals featuring Duane Allman on guitar. Decades later, Asarnow encouraged Scaggs to revisit the song, resulting in a beautiful reimagining that seamlessly integrates with the rest of the album’s cohesive sound.

Throughout Detour, Scaggs’s voice takes center stage, displaying his growth and depth over the years. With tracks like Allen Toussaint’s “It’s Raining” and the heartfelt “The Very Thought of You,” Scaggs showcases his mastery of restraint and phrasing, infusing every note with emotional clarity and elegance.

While many artists approach the Great American Songbook with reverence, Detour stands out for its unique perspective. Scaggs brings his six-decade-long experience in the music industry to the table, offering a fresh take on these timeless songs. The eclectic tracklist includes diverse tunes like the poignant ballad “Too Late Now,” the bluesy meditation of “Tomorrow Night,” and “Detour Ahead,” associated with legendary artists Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan.

With a career spanning decades and multiple hit records, including the iconic Silk Degrees from 1976, Boz Scaggs has solidified his position as one of rock and roll’s most soulful vocalists. Detour continues his legacy by honoring the enduring qualities of great music, steering away from trends and staying true to his unique sound.

Detour is set to release on October 17 via Concord Records, offering fans a fresh perspective on timeless classics and new interpretations of beloved songs.
