Rock Hall inductee boycotting ceremony due to undisclosed reasons

Once the inductees for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame were revealed earlier this year, Carol Kaye’s name stood out in the category of Musical Excellence. As a legendary bassist who played on The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds, influenced Paul McCartney, and contributed to countless pop songs, she found herself on the list. However, despite this honor, Kaye has decided to boycott the upcoming November ceremony in LA, as she recently shared in an interview with The New York Times.

At 90 years old, Kaye explained to the paper, “I don’t do things because other people want me to do them. I have to do things the way I see fit.” She believes that her identity lies more in being a jazz musician than a rocker and values herself as part of a team rather than a soloist, having worked in the studio closely with others. Kaye is best known for her work with the Wrecking Crew, a group of first-call session players, although she finds the name “Wrecking Crew” to be off-putting.

The decision to skip the ceremony may be influenced by the fact that her recognition has been somewhat delayed compared to her colleagues. Hal Blaine, another member of the Wrecking Crew, was inducted back in 2000, along with bass icon James Jamerson. Despite criticism she has faced in the past for her outspoken nature, Kaye is unapologetically honest and straightforward. As she stated to The New York Times, “When you get put on a pedestal, you better say the right things, or else you’re going to be known as nasty… But I just tell people, listen, this is what happened. This is how I feel. If you don’t like it, I’m sorry.”

Whether or not she attends the ceremony, Kaye’s impact on the music world is undeniable. Brian Wilson once hailed her as “the best bassist in the world,” while McCartney acknowledged that hearing Kaye’s work on Pet Sounds had a profound influence on his own musical style. Despite any controversies surrounding her, Kaye’s legacy remains secure, with her contributions being celebrated by those who truly understand her significance.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, where Kaye was set to be recognized, will be broadcast live on Disney+ on November 8, showcasing the achievements of the industry’s most respected musicians. Though Kaye may not be present at the event, her legacy as a groundbreaking bassist and influential figure in the music world will continue to be remembered and appreciated for years to come.
