Pursuing Bass Drum Of Death: Music Feature

Indianapolis was buzzing with excitement as Bass Drum Of Death took the stage at Turntable on a Thursday night. Despite the modest turnout, the smaller crowd size created an intimate atmosphere that only added to the energy of both the audience and the bands.

This show marked the beginning of a new tour for BDOD, with support from Austin-based band Farmer’s Wife, previously known as Sludge. Described as ‘alternative rock dream grunge,’ the band is fronted by singer and guitarist Molly Masson, whose melodic vocals are reminiscent of iconic 90s singers like Harriet Wheeler and Hope Sandoval. Despite their youthful appearance, Farmer’s Wife brings a nostalgic shoegaze vibe to the stage that captivates audiences.

Fans were treated to tracks from BDOD’s latest album, SIX, released just days before the show. This marked my third time seeing BDOD live, and each performance continues to impress with the band’s consistent quality of sound and stage presence. Bass Drum Of Death’s origins trace back to 2008 when John Barrett started as a one-man show in Mississippi, armed with only his bass drum, guitar, and vocals. After relocating to New York City, John was joined by his brother, Jim Barrett, and other touring band members, solidifying the band’s lineup.

The energy at Turntable was electric as BDOD took fans on a musical journey through their latest tracks and fan favorites. The raw, unapologetic sound that is characteristic of Bass Drum Of Death was on full display, showcasing the band’s signature blend of garage rock and punk influences. The audience’s enthusiasm matched the intensity on stage, creating a symbiotic relationship that fueled the performance.

As the night drew to a close, it was evident that both the audience and the bands had enjoyed a memorable evening of music and camaraderie. Despite the smaller crowd size, the intimate setting at Turntable allowed for a more personal connection between the performers and their fans. The energy of the night lingered in the air, a testament to the power of live music to bring people together and create lasting memories.
