Moler, an established indie rock group from Australia, has reemerged with their latest release, “AI,” their first since 2019. This new single infuses distorted guitars, energetic rhythms, and a punk rock vibe reminiscent of the 70s with a contemporary twist, exploring the intriguing relationship between love, technology, and artificial intelligence.

Emerging in St Kilda in the early 90s, Moler quickly became a standout in the Australian post-grunge scene, known for their dynamic live performances and the fearless vocals of their frontwoman, Helen Cattanach. Following a period of inactivity, the release of “AI” signals Moler’s confident return to the music scene and hints at the possibility of a highly anticipated follow-up to their well-received 1997 album, “Golden Duck.”

Helen explains, “Everyone, I mean everyone, is talking about AI. It felt like the perfect subject to explore in a song. The connections between AI and music, creativity, and our relationships are endless. The song delves into how AI could potentially become our therapist, organizer, or even emotional partner.”

With influences from punk legends such as The Saints, The Stooges, Sex Pistols, and Blondie, “AI” also incorporates the edgy vibe of 90s alternative rock and the melodic essence that has always characterized Moler’s music. The track effectively strikes a balance between nostalgia and futurism, showcasing Moler’s ability to merge grit with groove seamlessly.

The songwriting process for “AI” was a collaborative effort between Helen Cattanach on bass and vocals, David Peacock on drums, and new guitarist James “JJ” McCann, who injects fresh creativity into the group. Following the departure of founding guitarist Julien Poulson, McCann, previously associated with acts like Nunchukka Superfly and The Drones, joined the band after being tasked with learning 16 songs in just two weeks – a challenge he rose to with encouragement from a friend.

Recorded at Sound Park Studios with producer Andre “Idge” Hehir and finalized at Caution Horses Recording Studio by Miguel Alonso, with mastering by Lindsay Gravina, the same mind behind “Golden Duck,” the single “AI” is a testament to Moler’s dedication to their craft and evolution as a band. The accompanying video, filmed by Ian White, captures the raw, electrifying energy of Moler’s recent live performance at Espy, where they debuted new material to an enthusiastic audience.

Moler has deep roots in Melbourne’s thriving alternative music scene. Originally known as Snuff, the group burst onto the scene in 1993 with a dynamic power-pop sound that fused punk sensibilities with melodic intricacies. After signing with Infectious/Mushroom Records, their album “Golden Duck” in 1997 earned them critical acclaim, including an ARIA nomination for Best Rock Album in 1998, solidifying their status as one of the most captivating indie acts of their time.

Following a hiatus in 2001, Moler reunited in 2018 for a 25th-anniversary show and released the EP “Work” in 2019, marking a resurgence in their career. Despite challenges posed by the pandemic, the group is looking towards the future with plans for a new album in 2025, a highly anticipated follow-up to their seminal work, “Golden Duck.”

With upcoming tour dates scheduled in various venues, Moler is poised to captivate audiences once again with their signature blend of punk-inspired rock and melodic prowess. Their unwavering commitment to their craft and artistic evolution solidify their position as a pioneering force in the indie rock scene.
