Tommy Vetterli on Coroner’s Latest Album: “I Couldn’t Find Inspiration”

After years of silence, Coroner has made a triumphant return with their new album, Dissonance Theory. The album, released on October 17 via Century Media Records, marks the band’s first studio release since 1993’s Grin. Tommy Vetterli, also known as Tommy T. Baron, the band’s guitarist, songwriter, and producer, shared his thoughts on the new record in a recent interview. He emphasized the importance of not repeating past work but instead embracing new perspectives and creativity.

Vetterli acknowledged that he is a different person compared to when Coroner was last active, stating, “I couldn’t write No More Color again.” This realization prompted him to approach the new album with fresh eyes and a willingness to see where the music would take him. Despite the challenges and detours life threw his way, from personal struggles to professional obligations, Vetterli remained committed to delivering the best work possible.

Dissonance Theory features ten tracks with a total runtime of 47 minutes. Recorded at New Sound Studios in Switzerland by Vetterli himself, the album was mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios in Sweden. The album’s artwork, created by Stefan Thanneur, complements Coroner’s signature blend of intricate music and introspective themes.

Although Vetterli initially considered mixing the album himself, he ultimately opted to bring in fresh talent in the form of Jens Bogren. Vetterli explained, “I felt like someone with a fresh ear should mix it because I couldn’t see the forest for the trees.” This decision highlights the band’s commitment to delivering a high-quality, cohesive record that reflects their growth and evolution.

When announcing Dissonance Theory, Vetterli emphasized the importance of grounding the album in the present rather than dwelling on past achievements. He stated, “We just wanted to create something honest and grounded in the present.” This sentiment underscores Coroner’s dedication to staying true to themselves while exploring new musical avenues and maintaining their artistic integrity.
