Castro and Democrats visit Dilley Detention Center to meet detained 5-year-old and father
The recent visit by Rep. Joaquin Castro to the ICE detention facility in Dilley, Texas, highlighted the case of 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos and his father, who are currently detained at the center. The alarming image of young Liam Conejo Ramos has garnered widespread attention and raised significant concerns about the detention of minors in such facilities. Following his detention, Liam and his father were subsequently transferred to the Dilley detention center, situated approximately 85 miles southwest of San Antonio.
In response to this pressing issue, a news conference was organized on the steps of San Antonio City Hall, drawing a crowd of concerned individuals, including members of Congress, all advocating for the release of young Liam Ramos from the ICE facility in Dilley. Congressman Joaquin Castro, who personally visited Liam and his father at the detention center, made a public statement expressing his commitment to doing everything possible to secure their release. He emphasized the widespread public support for Liam’s release and urged immediate action from ICE to address their situation.
The event, aptly named “Bring Liam Home,” served as a platform to shine a light on the plight of Liam Ramos, who was originally taken into custody in Minnesota before being brought to Texas. Representative Tony Gonzales, who represents the San Antonio and Dilley areas, has visited the facility multiple times and has refuted claims of harsh conditions within the detention center. In fact, Gonzales remarked that the facility was, in some aspects, better equipped than certain local schools, as it includes amenities like a school, church, and soccer field.
During the course of the visit, tensions ran high due to conflicting reports from federal officials, advocates, and lawmakers regarding the treatment of detainees at the facility. Instances of protests, both within and outside the center, have been documented, with detainees raising signs calling for “Libertad para los niños” (Freedom for the children). Moreover, advocacy groups have accused the facility of unsanitary conditions, inadequate medical care, and substandard food provisions for the detainees, allegations that have been substantiated in various court filings.
Despite these allegations, the Department of Homeland Security has countered by asserting that regular inspections have shown that detainees receive proper meals, access to clean water, medical attention, and basic necessities. The visit by Rep. Joaquin Castro aimed to promote transparency, ensure accountability, and prioritize the safety and release of Liam Ramos. As the situation unfolds, the broader debate surrounding immigration policies and detainee treatment in such facilities continues to be a focal point of public scrutiny and discussion.
