A video posted on social media by Elliot Forhan, a Democratic candidate for Ohio Attorney General, has sparked controversy over his statement about wanting to “kill Donald Trump” through execution. In the 40-second video, Forhan detailed a scenario where he would convict President Trump, leading to a sentence of capital punishment.

Forhan clarified his statement by explaining that by “kill Donald Trump,” he meant obtaining a conviction through a jury trial that meets the standard of proof beyond a reasonable doubt, following the due process requirements, and ultimately carrying out the sentence of capital punishment.

Despite the lack of specifics on the alleged crimes committed by Trump, the video received strong condemnation from Republican leaders in Ohio. State Auditor Keith Faber, also a candidate for state attorney general on the Republican ticket, criticized Forhan’s remarks as vile and expressed that they disqualified him from the role of attorney general.

Former state Rep. Jay Edwards, a Republican running for Ohio treasurer, highlighted Forhan’s history of aggressive behavior towards political opponents. Edwards pointed out that Forhan has a pattern of seeking to harm his rivals, referencing a past incident where Forhan used inappropriate language towards another public figure.

In response to the backlash, Forhan faced calls to address his violent rhetoric. While Republican leaders denounced his comments, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton has yet to publicly address the controversy.

It is worth noting that in 2023, Forhan faced consequences within the Democratic Party for his abusive behavior towards staff and colleagues, leading to his removal from committee assignments and office access.

Former state Rep. Jay Edwards further criticized Forhan for his remarks, emphasizing that the use of legal jargon to justify a violent fantasy towards the President is not clever but indicative of a disturbed mindset. Edwards highlighted the inconsistency of a candidate vying for the state’s top law enforcement position expressing such extreme views.

The incident involving Forhan’s video underscores the heated political climate and the need for civility in discourse. It serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible communication and respectful engagement in the political arena, regardless of ideological differences.
