Kid Rock upset over Department of Justice’s deal with Live Nation

Last week, the US Justice Department reached a settlement in an antitrust lawsuit against Live Nation and Ticketmaster, who had merged in 2010 and faced allegations of engaging in anti-competitive practices. The decision to settle came as a surprise and disappointment to many observers. The lawsuit was initially filed by Joe Biden’s administration in 2024, but the Federal Trade Commission continued to investigate Live Nation during Donald Trump’s presidency, largely due to advocacy from Trump ally Kid Rock, who has been outspoken against the companies in recent years.

Kid Rock, also known as Bob Ritchie, has been a vocal critic of Live Nation and Ticketmaster. In a video posted online last year, he urged political adversaries Pearl Jam to support the government’s antitrust efforts against the companies. This year, he testified before the Senate, describing Live Nation and Ticketmaster as a “cartel.” Therefore, Kid Rock was disappointed to learn of the DOJ’s decision to settle the case.

A guest essay in The New York Times by former Rolling Stone editor Noah Shachtman includes quotes from Kid Rock expressing his disagreement with the settlement. Kid Rock stated that while he had been involved in the government’s actions against Live Nation, he was not part of the settlement negotiations and did not support the decision. He questioned the rationale behind reaching a settlement, suggesting that the case should have proceeded to trial to be decided by a jury.

Given the recent revelation of emails where employees disparaged customers and boasted about taking advantage of them, many believe that the settlement missed an opportunity to hold Live Nation and Ticketmaster accountable for their actions. The settlement raised questions about the enforcement of antitrust laws and the regulation of the entertainment industry.

Overall, the settlement of the antitrust lawsuit against Live Nation and Ticketmaster has sparked controversy and disappointment among critics, including Kid Rock, who have long been vocal about the companies’ alleged anti-competitive practices. The decision to settle instead of pursuing the case in court has left many wondering about the implications for future antitrust enforcement efforts and the accountability of powerful entities in the entertainment industry.
