miering our songs for the first time. It was a big challenge to overcome, but it’s been cool to see how people have responded to it. There’s always people that are in similar situations that are grateful for the music.”
Photosynthesis, the band’s latest video, captures the essence of this newfound vulnerability and emotional depth. Directed by Benjamin Dutton and produced by Rays Narvasa, the video follows a person as they go through the stages of grief in a garden, with each scene encapsulating a different emotion tied to the universally relatable feeling of loss. It’s a departure from the band’s previous videos, but it is a change aligned with the growth the band has experienced this year.
“It’s a more artistic take that we haven’t seen from us before,” Walters says of the video. “We used to do more of the narrative stuff for our music videos, but this time it was a lot more experimental. We wanted to open up the floor and let the director do what he thought our song was saying or how it made him feel. It’s cool to see your music through someone else’s perspective; it’s not as directly tied to the initial inspiration.”
From the vulnerability of the lyrics to the experimental nature of the video, The Way That I Felt Last Year is a testament to the band’s willingness to challenge themselves creatively and emotionally. It’s an EP that invites listeners to reflect on their own experiences with loss and change, and offers a sense of shared empathy in a world that can often feel isolated. The July Crowd has not only redefined their sound but also their purpose as a band, connecting with listeners on a deeper level and exploring the complexities of human emotion through their music.
