Jonathan Cain and Journey Part Ways Prior to Speculated Farewell Tour
Jonathan Cain, the keyboardist of the iconic band Journey, has recently departed from the group. Guitarist Neal Schon confirmed this news in a statement posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. Schon announced that Cain bid farewell to the band on the night of Thursday, October 9th. The departure comes just before the band is set to embark on a rumored farewell tour, which Cain has hinted at in recent interviews by labeling their upcoming tour as a farewell journey.
In response to Cain’s exit, Schon reassured fans on social media that he is still dedicated to Journey and expressed excitement for the future of the band. Despite Cain’s departure, Schon emphasized that they are on good terms, with Cain choosing to leave to focus on his ministry ventures. A spokesperson for Cain also clarified that the musician remains an active member of Journey and intends to tour with the band over the next couple of years before retiring at a later date.
The relationship between Schon and Cain had been strained in the past, with tensions rising over allegations of mismanagement and overspending within the band’s business operations. Cain filed a lawsuit against Schon in Delaware’s Court of Chancery in July 2024, accusing him of excessive spending and interfering with the company’s financial stability. Cain sought court intervention to address the deadlock between the two band members, ultimately leading to the cancellation of Journey’s U.K. and Ireland tour dates.
Despite these internal conflicts, Schon expressed optimism about the upcoming tour with Cain. In a recent interview with Eddie Trunk on Trunk Nation, Schon revealed that he had positive discussions with Cain and expected their upcoming tour to be a fulfilling and cohesive experience for both musicians.
Cain joined Journey in 1980 and has become the band’s second-longest tenured member since then. Over the years, he and Schon have managed business operations through a corporate entity known as Freedom 2020, Inc. The company, co-owned by Cain and Schon, faced challenges due to alleged mismanagement by Schon, leading to a legal battle between the two bandmates.
As Journey prepares for their forthcoming tour, fans eagerly await more details about the band’s future and the impact of Cain’s departure on their music and performances. Despite the departure of a key member, both Schon and Cain remain committed to their respective careers and the future of Journey.
