Tame Impala Experiencing Midlife Crisis

cut from “The Slow Rush” and spruced up as a single for “Deadbeat,” sticks out as the only track with drums and guitar, bringing a familiar sound amidst the blandness of the rest of the album.

The lyrical content of the album is another sore point. The single “Dracula” contains overused themes of vampirism, beginning with an ominous chorus and synth but quickly derailing with an out-of-place cartoonish “ding” sound, not fitting the song’s intended vibe. The music video for “Dracula” features an eerie, occult-like dance party in a deserted house, attempting to create an avant-garde atmosphere but missing the mark with its forced thematic elements.

Moreover, listening to the album, it’s evident that the recurring themes of isolation and love trouble, which have been consistent across Tame Impala’s discography, come across as stale and repetitive in “Deadbeat.” Parker’s earlier reflections on solitude and personal struggles had a profound impact on listeners, but after years of the same narrative, it feels tired and unoriginal. As a fan of Tame Impala, the new album leaves me wishing for a fresh perspective from Parker, a shift away from the worn-out themes of self-pity and alienation.

The overall impression of “Deadbeat” is that it lacks the depth and innovation that Tame Impala is known for. Parker’s attempt to venture into the dance-pop genre falls short, with the album coming across as uninspired and formulaic. In contrast to the experimental and boundary-pushing nature of Tame Impala’s earlier work, “Deadbeat” feels like a regression rather than progression in the artist’s evolution.

As a long-time admirer of Tame Impala, it’s disheartening to witness the stagnation and lack of growth in Parker’s recent release. With a discography that once challenged boundaries and captivated audiences, “Deadbeat” falls flat in delivering the same level of intrigue and creativity. It’s perhaps time for Kevin Parker to reevaluate his musical direction and explore new avenues of expression that can reignite the passion and brilliance that initially defined Tame Impala.
