Dave Navarro purchases Les Paul guitar for Guns N’ Roses: An amazing story

Dave Navarro, known for his work with Jane’s Addiction and Red Hot Chili Peppers, shared an intriguing story about a Les Paul guitar that held significant memories for him. Reflecting on his Guitar World cover shoot from ’96, Navarro delved into the past, remembering how he became attached to the Les Paul guitar that was featured prominently in the photoshoot.

During the early days of Jane’s Addiction in the ’80s, Navarro was a devoted Les Paul player, a fact not widely known among fans. His Black Beauty was a staple in the band’s performances and recordings, as evidenced by their first live record. However, a mishap on tour led to the unfortunate breaking of one of his Les Paul guitars, prompting Navarro to seek endorsement deals. At that time, Ibanez was the only company willing to support him, and Navarro embraced their guitars for several years until 1991.

After parting ways with Ibanez, Navarro found himself in possession of a Les Paul once again. The opportunity arose with an audition for Guns N’ Roses, post-Use Your Illusion era, where Navarro considered the Les Paul the ideal choice for the occasion. Despite purchasing the guitar with the intention of playing with GNR, Navarro’s plans shifted, and the Les Paul remained tucked away as he aligned his musical endeavors with PRS guitars during Lollapalooza.

His journey with the Les Paul took an unexpected turn when John Frusciante, a member of Red Hot Chili Peppers at the time, reached out to Navarro while in detox and in need of a guitar. Navarro, recalling the Les Paul leaning against a wall at his home, decided to offer it to Frusciante for temporary use. The guitar, which was featured in Guitar World shoot photographs at his residence, became a lifeline for Frusciante during his recovery phase.

Navarro’s story encapsulates the intricate relationships musicians form with their instruments and how these connections endure, even after parting ways with iconic guitars.
