Sully Erna retracts statement about “Lighting Up The Sky” being final Godsmack album
Sully Erna, the lead vocalist and guitarist of Godsmack, recently caused quite a stir when he spoke with certainty about the band’s apparent final studio album, Lighting Up The Sky, back in 2022. In an interview with 93X and the Everblack podcast, Erna was quite adamant, saying, “This is the last record we’re ever gonna do. This is the last run around the mill for us. We put every single ounce of energy and emotion into this album.”
Despite this declaration, Erna was clear that he was not suggesting the band was disbanding but rather hinting that their recording days might be numbered: “I’m not saying the band may be breaking up. What I’m saying is I think this may be the last body of work you get musically from the band.”
However, with significant shifts in Godsmack’s lineup this year, such as the departure of Godsmack’s longtime guitarist Tony Rombola and drummer Shannon Larkin, the band’s future seemed somewhat uncertain. Nevertheless, Erna maintained that their separation was peaceful and without any drama.
Recently, while appearing on Kylie Olsson’s Life In Six Strings podcast, Erna appeared to backtrack on his previous stance regarding the band’s future, now suggesting that another album might be in the cards. When asked about the possibility of a tenth Godsmack album, he replied, “I think there will. I said there wasn’t going to be, and at least I know there won’t be with the original members.”
Acknowledging the retirement of both Shannon and Tony, Erna shared that they were still on good terms, emphasizing that there was no animosity between the former bandmates. Erna also teased some exciting plans for 2026 and the introduction of new members to the band, signaling a potential revival for Godsmack.
The announcement of a new album would mark a considerable shift in Erna’s earlier statements, underscoring the evolving dynamics within the band. With upcoming tour dates and new members in the works, Godsmack appears to be on an upward trajectory, hitting new career highs and achieving peak attendance. Amidst temporary setbacks and changing band compositions, it seems that Godsmack’s creative future is brighter than ever.
