Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth Believes “Progressive” has Become Diluted in Contemporary Rock and Metal

Progressive rock and metal have always been regarded as genres that push boundaries, experiment with styles, and break away from the norm. Opeth’s Mikael Åkerfeldt highlights that this sense of innovation and boldness that once defined progressive music is slowly disappearing. In an interview with Prog Project, Åkerfeldt expressed his discontent with the current state of the genre, suggesting that the term “progressive” lacks a clear definition in contemporary music.

Reflecting on the past, Åkerfeldt emphasized that identifying progressive bands was simpler in the earlier days due to their willingness to blend various styles and embrace risks. However, he believes that the current perception of progressive music centers more around fast guitar solos, devoid of true progression. He noted that rock and metal scenes, in particular, have seen a regression instead of forward-thinking evolution.

Åkerfeldt is ambivalent when it comes to labeling Opeth as a progressive band, indicating that he leaves such categorizations up to the audience. He expressed his dwindling interest in being boxed into the progressive genre, emphasizing that genre limits can stifle creativity. For him, breaking new ground and avoiding creative repetition take precedence over adhering to a specific label or sound.

Despite the nostalgic pull from some fans to revisit Opeth’s past sound, Åkerfeldt remains focused on evolving artistically and avoiding stagnation. While Opeth may have roots in progressive rock and metal, Åkerfeldt allows his diverse influences to shape the band’s development rather than conforming to genre expectations. He prioritizes emotional intent and artistic growth guided by personal passions over merely fitting into established genre conventions.

When asked if he deliberately strives for “progressive” elements within Opeth’s music, Åkerfeldt dismisses this notion, explaining his aversion to repetitive songwriting and the pursuit of emotional depth in his music.
