“Music City revisits classic rock era with new recording of “Pretty Feelings””
Conor Lumsden, the drummer, singer, and songwriter for Dublin’s The Number Ones, has dedicated six years to crafting the band’s upcoming album, “Music City.” Collaborating with various artists and recording in studios across Dublin, New York, London, and Kinks Studio in Konk, Lumsden has poured his heart and soul into this project. The dedication and hard work have paid off, as their lead single from 2018, “Pretty Feelings,” has already garnered a cult following.
With the release of their full-length album set for February 6, Music City promises to deliver a sound that pays homage to guitar music from the past 50 years while maintaining a fresh and contemporary edge. The infectious chorus of “Pretty Feelings” sets the tone for the album with its simple yet engaging lyrics, complemented by tight grooves that capture the listener’s attention. Despite re-recording the track for the album, the essence of the song remains true to its roots.
The follow-up single, “Common Sense,” featuring Tina Halladay, showcases a blend of T. Rex-inspired riffs and 60s psychedelia accents, culminating in a dynamic and eclectic sound. Lumsden’s vision for Music City is to create a concise rock album that draws inspiration from the 60s, 70s, and beyond, exploring a range of influences that resonate with a modern audience.
Throughout the recording process, Lumsden aimed to capture a live and authentic sound, with the musicians often learning their parts moments before recording to maintain a sense of spontaneity. Vocal takes were meticulously crafted, with some tracks averaging over 300 attempts to achieve the desired performance style without the use of pitch correction software.
As Music City prepares for upcoming gigs, Lumsden faces the challenge of assembling a lineup that captures the harmonies and dynamics present in the recordings. With a rotating cast of band members, including a bass player currently touring with Biffy Clyro, Lumsden navigates the ever-changing landscape of live performances. The intricate vocal arrangements and multiple harmonies featured in their songs pose a unique challenge for translating their studio sound to the stage.
Despite the uncertainties surrounding live shows and lineup changes, Lumsden remains committed to bringing Music City to life with energy and enthusiasm. The evolution of The Number Ones into Music City marks a new chapter in Lumsden’s musical journey, one that promises to captivate audiences with its blend of past influences and contemporary flair. The dedication, passion, and talent of Lumsden and his collaborators shine through in every track, offering a glimpse into the vibrant world of Music City and its eclectic sound.
