The Herd is commemorating the 20th anniversary of their landmark album The Sun Never Sets with a nationwide tour scheduled for February 2026. Produced by Destroy All Lines, The Sun Never Sets 20th Anniversary Tour will travel to various Australian cities, including Thirroul, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, and Hobart. Audiences can relish performances from the iconic album, as well as enjoy well-loved songs from the band’s repertoire.
The Herd was a group ahead of its time, unafraid to confront contentious subjects and ignite discussions on anti-racism, decolonization, anti-war efforts, and environmentalism through their music. Their third record, The Sun Never Sets, catapulted them into the limelight, solidifying their status as one of Australia’s most sociopolitically active music acts. The album, which earned nominations for ARIA and J Awards, also introduced the group’s fans to new singer Jane Tyrrell. Following her appearance on the album and live performances with The Herd, Tyrrell was invited to join the band over the phone just before they hit the stage for a radio show in Newcastle.
The album’s tracklist features an unforgettable cover of Redgum’s ‘I Was Only 19,’ which became one of the most enduring Like A Versions in the history of the popular Australian radio station, triple j. Certified ARIA Gold, the song secured the 18th spot in both the 2005 and 2023 triple j Hottest 100 charts of Like A Versions, a remarkable feat that underscores its lasting influence.
With a unique setup encompassing rappers, singers, guitars, laptops, samplers, bass, and a piano accordion, The Herd quickly established itself as one of the nation’s most captivating live acts. Their performances at major festivals such as Big Day Out, Splendour In The Grass, Falls Festival, Homebake, Groovin The Moo, and Parklife further solidified their popularity among music enthusiasts.
The core members of The Herd also founded Elefant Traks, a highly regarded independent record label in Australia, which operated successfully for 25 years before closing its doors in 2024. Rapper and founder of Elefant Traks, Kenny Sabir (Traksewt), reflected on the 20 years since the release of The Sun Never Sets, acknowledging the album as a pivotal moment in the band’s career. He shared that the record marked the group’s breakthrough into major festivals, a challenging feat for an independent hip-hop band at the time. Sabir also highlighted the group’s experimentation during that period, pushing boundaries by exploring odd time signatures and unconventional musical styles.
As they prepare to commemorate the 20th anniversary of The Sun Never Sets, The Herd is excited to delight audiences with fan favorites such as ‘Unpredictable,’ ‘Under Pressure,’ and ‘We Can’t Hear You,’ as well as perform some lesser-known tracks from the album. The upcoming tour will be a thrilling celebration of The Herd’s musical journey and their impactful contributions to Australian music history.
