Bruce Springsteen made a surprise appearance at a solidarity concert in Minnesota this week, treating fans to the live debut of a new song called “Streets of Minneapolis”. The event, hosted by Tom Morello, took place at the iconic First Avenue venue in Minneapolis on January 30. This venue has a rich musical history and is famously associated with Prince.

The concert, called A Concert of Solidarity & Resistance to Defend Minnesota!, was announced just days beforehand and featured a lineup that included Rise Against, Al Di Meola, and Ike Reilly. Speculation had been rife that a special guest might appear, and the rumors turned out to be true when Springsteen took the stage to an enthusiastic response from the audience.

All proceeds from the show were earmarked for the families of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, two protesters who tragically lost their lives recently in Minnesota. This cause inspired Springsteen to write “Streets of Minneapolis,” a song he composed and recorded in just one day before sending it to Morello.

Morello introduced Springsteen as his “good friend and fellow freedom fighter,” setting the stage for Springsteen’s performance. Armed with an acoustic guitar and a harmonica, Springsteen expressed some reservations about the song’s straightforward message, but Morello encouraged him, saying, “Nuance is wonderful, but sometimes you have to kick them in the teeth.”

The song itself is a bold statement, with lyrics critical of US immigration enforcement and allusions to recent events in Minneapolis. Springsteen sings about standing up for the marginalized and honoring those who have lost their lives on the city’s streets, earning cheers from the audience as he delivers the powerful message.

Morello underscored the importance of activism, stating, “I believe that the future of democracy in this country will be decided right here on the streets of Minneapolis.” This sentiment aligns Springsteen with a growing cohort of artists who are using their platforms to condemn aggressive immigration policies, joining the ranks of luminaries such as Billie Eilish, FINNEAS, and Bon Iver.

This surprise appearance at the solidarity concert catapulted Springsteen back into the limelight and reinforced his reputation as a politically engaged artist willing to use his music to address urgent social issues, even with a brand-new song. Springsteen’s dedication to resonant storytelling and impactful social commentary continues to captivate and inspire audiences around the world.
