The Best Classic Bands: My First 100 Record Albums

Growing up in a New York City suburb in the ’60s, my earliest musical influences came from my parents’ love of classical music and opera. As a child, I had yet to discover the world of popular vocalists and show tunes. However, in 1964, my musical horizon expanded when my mom brought home a record album that would change my life forever – Meet the Beatles.

From the moment I set my eyes on the jacket cover depicting those four musicians with their matching haircuts, I was captivated. The first notes of “I Want to Hold Your Hand” played through the speakers, and I was immediately hooked. Little did I know that this introduction to the Beatles would spark a deep passion for music within me, setting the foundation for my future career.

Watching the Beatles perform on The Ed Sullivan Show in dazzling black-and-white on my parents’ small TV set further solidified my admiration for the band. As I listened to tracks like “I Saw Her Standing There,” “It Won’t Be Long,” and “All My Loving,” I was entranced by the infectious energy and innovation that the Beatles brought to the music scene.

With each new album my mom brought home, like The Beatles Second Album featuring songs like “She Loves You,” “Roll Over Beethoven,” and “Long Tall Sally,” my music collection began to grow. While my early LPs are now housed in generic album jackets, the magic of those initial Beatles records stayed with me throughout the years.

As I grew older and began working odd jobs to earn money, I invested in expanding my music collection. Although albums were expensive, each new addition brought me closer to the 100-record milestone that would become a significant part of my musical journey. While many of my peers transitioned to CDs as the preferred format in the ’80s, I remained loyal to my vinyl collection, cherishing the warm sound and nostalgic feel of playing records on my turntable.

Over the years, I meticulously cataloged my music library, identifying the first 100 albums that held a special place in my heart. While some of these records may have disappeared over time, the memories and impact they had on me endure. From the timeless hits of the Beatles to the diverse sounds of various artists, each album in my collection tells a unique story and holds a special significance in my musical evolution.

Reflecting on my journey through music, I am grateful for the opportunity to meet and express my appreciation to the artists who shaped my musical tastes. Each album in my collection represents a chapter in my life story, a soundtrack to the memories and moments that have defined my love for rock and roll.
