Mumford and Sons are set to release their latest album, “Prizefighter,” after a seven-year hiatus. Frontman Marcus Mumford explains that during this break, he was in denial and unsure of his identity as a songwriter. It took a pep talk from Noel Gallagher of Oasis to ignite his passion for music once again. Gallagher’s advice about catching songwriting inspiration before others like Chris Martin or Bono isn’t new to Marcus. This encounter served as a wakeup call, prompting Mumford & Sons to work on their music fervently, resulting in the quick succession of two albums within seven months.

The band’s inspiration for releasing two albums in such quick succession came from a friend’s idea of a “bang-bang,” where one enjoys a full meal at one restaurant, then moves on to another restaurant for another meal. Knowing people who have completed this challenge, Mumford liked the idea of applying it to a musical concept. “Prizefighter” features various guest appearances, with Hozier being one of them on the track “Rubber Band Man.” Marcus Mumford mentions that they allowed Hozier to choose the song he wanted to collaborate on, reflecting their desire to open up to artistic collaborations and showcase their extensive network of friends. Their intention with this album was to highlight the collaborative nature of their band, which they believe hasn’t been adequately represented on their previous records.

Collaboration was a new experience for Mumford & Sons, as they were protective of their creative space and songwriting process in the past. However, spending time with other songwriters has shown Marcus that connecting with others through music is essential. They embraced working with other artists and relished the experience of collaborating to create music that resonates deeply with their audience. Described as having folksy roots, “Prizefighter” includes a track titled “The Banjo Song,” which is likely to appeal to fans who appreciate the band’s signature sound. The emotive lyrics in this song strike a chord, especially considering the challenging year many faced in 2025.

Mumford emphasizes the importance of connecting with listeners through their music and sees collaboration as a way to enhance this connection. By working with friends and diverse artists on “Prizefighter,” Mumford & Sons aim to showcase a more inclusive and collaborative approach to their music, breaking away from their previous guarded stance on creative partnerships. The new album reflects their growth as musicians and their willingness to embrace new voices, ideas, and experiences within the music industry.
