Dallas could potentially witness vehicle-free downtown streets during the World Cup, as discussions continue on how to adapt the city to accommodate the influx of visitors during the event. One local musician making waves on the music scene is Max Poscente, an alumnus of Booker T. Washington, who leads the indie band About You. The band’s debut album, “The Lighthouse, The Storm,” was recorded at Modern Electric Sound Recorders in Dallas and showcases a blend of local talent.

Poscente’s journey in music began over a decade ago with The Azalea Project, a band that made a significant impact on the Dallas music scene before members pursued other ventures. Poscente himself ventured to Seattle for art school before eventually settling in Boston to study at the Berklee College of Music. Inspired by his experiences in Boston and driven by his desire to incorporate personal stories into his music, Poscente formed About You. The band’s early singles, such as “Hunky Dory” and “Cactus,” laid the groundwork for their unique sound, culminating in the release of “The Lighthouse, The Storm.”

Drawing influences from artists like Tame Impala and Bright Eyes, Poscente steered the direction of the album, infusing it with neo-soul vibes and intricate lyrical content. The tracks on the album are built on a mix of R&B drum samples and live recordings, creating a rich tapestry of sound. Standout tracks include “MoNa,” “Novocaine/444am,” “What if I Could?” and the opening track, “Farewell to Ghosts.”

“The Lighthouse, The Storm” took years to create, with the journey peppered with challenges, particularly amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Poscente’s move to LA in 2019 to kickstart the album was met with obstacles, leading to a reroute to Dallas and eventual recording sessions at Modern Electric. Collaboration with respected Dallas musicians further enriched the album, with contributors like Jason Burt making significant contributions to the sound of tracks like “MoNa.”

Poscente’s dedication to pushing musical boundaries while paying homage to various genres is evident throughout “The Lighthouse, The Storm.” Despite the setbacks and challenges faced during its creation, the album stands as a testament to Poscente’s artistic vision and commitment to his craft. As Dallas gears up for potential changes in its downtown streets during the World Cup, artists like Poscente continue to shape the city’s cultural landscape with their compelling music.
