Wu-Tang Clan and Lauryn Hill have received nominations for induction into the prestigious Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Joining the ranks of legendary artists like Mariah Carey, Sade, New Edition, Luther Vandross, and Phil Collins, the two musical acts are part of the diverse Class of 2026 nominees, encompassing genres from rock and hip-hop to heavy metal, soul, R&B, pop, and new wave.

These nominations hold special significance as Wu-Tang Clan and Lauryn Hill are first-time nominees, despite exceeding the 25-year eligibility period required since their debut albums were released (Enter the Wu-Tang [36 Chambers] in 1993 and The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in 1998). If inducted, Wu-Tang Clan would become the ninth hip-hop act in the Rock Hall, while Lauryn Hill could be just the third female rap artist to receive this honor, following Missy Elliott and Salt-N-Pepa.

To date, a total of 15 hip-hop acts have been welcomed into the Hall of Fame, including iconic artists like JAY-Z, Eminem, 2Pac, Biggie, OutKast, A Tribe Called Quest, Run-DMC, LL Cool J, and Public Enemy. The final decision on the Class of 2026 inductees will be made by over 1,200 experts from the music industry, historians, and artists. Following this selection process, the official lineup for induction will be confirmed in April, with the induction ceremony scheduled for the fall of this year.

The announcement of their nominations comes as bittersweet news for Wu-Tang Clan amidst the recent passing of one of their key members, Oliver “Power” Grant. Grant, who played a vital role in establishing the group’s streetwear brand Wu Wear and elevating their status as a global cultural phenomenon, passed away at the age of 52. The news of his death was met with heartfelt tributes from Wu-Tang members, with Method Man expressing his sorrow on social media, stating, “Paradise my Brother safe Travels!! #pookie #power Bruh I am not ok..”

Reflecting on the loss, RZA honored Grant by sharing a post on Instagram, commemorating him with a black square symbolizing mourning, set to the tune of Boyz II Men’s “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday”. The gesture was accompanied by a caption “5”, signifying the Five-Percent Nation’s Supreme mathematics, which inspired Grant’s nickname. The hip-hop community at large also joined in paying their respects, with tributes pouring in from Raekwon, Cam’ron, DJ Premier, and others.

The nominations of Wu-Tang Clan and Lauryn Hill for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame not only recognize their significant contributions to music but also celebrate their lasting impact on the industry. As the music world eagerly awaits the announcement of the Class of 2026 inductees, the recognition of these iconic acts showcases their enduring influence on generations of artists and fans alike.
