Scotland’s inaugural free bookshop is gearing up to mark World Book Day by inspiring the community to reignite their love for reading and assist others in doing the same. Situated within the bustling Buchanan Galleries, GET Free Books is under the management of the Global Educational Trust, a charitable organization with a focus on advancing literacy and reading proficiencies by granting free access to books through its network of over 20 bookstores spread across the United Kingdom.

Debuting its Glasgow branch in June 2025, this welcoming establishment offers a diverse selection of pre-loved books spanning various categories, allowing visitors to take home up to three books at no cost. With World Book Day fast approaching on Thursday, March 5, GET Free Books is extending a warm invitation to everyone to drop by, grab a complimentary read, and embrace the transformative impact that reading can have.

By eliminating financial obstacles, the initiative ensures that individuals from all walks of life have the chance to indulge in the joy of books, irrespective of their circumstances. Concurrently, the charity is reaching out to the local community, urging them to donate any unwanted books to help maintain a well-stocked inventory and keep the narratives alive.

Junaid Rahim, a Trustee at GET Free Books, expressed, “World Book Day serves as a poignant reminder of the transformative power that books possess in inspiring, educating, and connecting individuals. We are encouraging all to swing by the store, pick a book, and if possible, contribute one as well. A book that has served its purpose for you could very well be the catalyst for someone else’s literary journey.”

Kathy Murdoch, the center director at Buchanan Galleries, chimed in, stating, “World Book Day serves as a celebration of the enchanting realm of storytelling and the delight found in this timeless pursuit. We are thrilled to contribute towards making books freely accessible to all, thereby supporting the vision of GET Free Books in democratizing reading.”

In essence, the arrival of Scotland’s maiden free bookshop is not merely a testament to literary inclusivity but also underlines the profound impact that a shared love for reading can foster within a community. As the world gears up to commemorate World Book Day, let us reflect on the enduring power of stories while championing initiatives that democratize access to books and pave the way for a more literature-rich society.
