Metric releases new single ‘Time Is A Bomb’ before upcoming tenth album
Metric, a band that has thrived on the delicate balance between precision and chaos for over two decades, recently released their new single titled “Time Is A Bomb.” This track, which serves as the second preview of their upcoming tenth album “Romanticize The Dive” scheduled for release on April 24, explores the dynamic tension between order and disorder in their music.
The song’s pulsating energy is driven by a blend of guitars and synths, embodying the restless urgency that has always characterized Metric’s sound. Lead vocalist Emily Haines delivers a powerful hook with a mix of determination and defiance, singing, “Time is a bomb that’s ticking faster / I love to flirt with disaster.” These lyrics encapsulate a sense of embracing the present moment, even when faced with the imminent passage of time.
Haines sheds light on the song’s underlying themes, relating it to society’s current preoccupation with wellness as a response to the heightened awareness of mortality in modern life. “Time Is A Bomb” delves into the conflicting desires to either freeze time or race through it at full speed, resulting in a track that pulses with adrenaline while also introspectively questioning one’s motivations.
For their latest album, Metric chose to return to their roots by recording in New York City, where the band was initially formed. The iconic Electric Lady Studios served as the backdrop for their creative process, and they reunited with producer Gavin Brown, known for his work on previous Metric albums such as “Fantasies” and “Synthetica.” Guitarist and songwriter Jimmy Shaw, along with Liam O’Neil, took on co-production duties, while longtime collaborator John O’Mahoney handled the mixing.
The decision to return to Electric Lady Studios was not merely practical but symbolic, as it reconnected Metric with the vibrant energy of the early 2000s indie scene that propelled them to fame. This creative endeavor positioned Metric at the intersection of past influences and the contemporary cultural milieu of 2026.
Throughout their journey, Metric’s lineup has remained unchanged, showcasing Emily Haines on vocals and keys, Jimmy Shaw on guitar and production, Joshua Winstead on bass, and Joules Scott-Key on drums. Together, these four individuals have cultivated Metric into one of Canada’s most enduring indie-rock success stories, opting for artistic independence over major label affiliations and expanding their creative horizons steadily.
Beyond Metric, both Haines and Shaw have maintained a presence in the music scene, contributing to Broken Social Scene’s collective efforts and collaborating with various artists and producers. Metric’s music has resonated widely, finding its way into numerous films, television shows, and cultural touchpoints, from “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” to “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.”
As Metric continues to evolve and navigate the ever-changing landscape of the music industry, their commitment to authenticity and innovation remains unwavering. With the release of “Time Is A Bomb” and their forthcoming album “Romanticize The Dive,” Metric invites listeners to embark on a musical journey that embodies the essence of their artistry and creative spirit.
