Teen Suicide Releases Energetic New Single ‘Spiders’ in Anticipation of Upcoming Album
Baltimore’s cherished indie rock band Teen Suicide recently presented their latest single, “Spiders,” an adrenaline-packed track that heralds a new era for the band. The song is a preview of their upcoming album, “Nude Descending Staircase Headless,” scheduled for release on April 17th.
Produced by Mike Sapone, known for his work with bands like Taking Back Sunday and Oso Oso, the new album marks a departure from Teen Suicide’s earlier lo-fi style. In this record, the band opts for a fuller studio sound while maintaining the emotional depth that characterizes their music.
“Spiders” seamlessly shifts between radiant verses and electrifying, distortion-laden choruses, showcasing Kitty Ray’s first full lead vocal on a Teen Suicide track. Speaking of the song’s creation, Kitty shared, “This song came to life on a sunny day in Florida, where the brightness around me sparked an unexpected anger that needed an outlet. I wanted to vent about a girl who had tangled my thoughts and envisioned a particular guitar arrangement for the song.”
Performing the track live initially posed a challenge for Kitty, as she admits, “I was terrified to sing it live… it didn’t sound right initially. Over time, the song evolved, and screaming helped me find my voice. I’m proud of how it turned out.”
“Nude Descending Staircase Headless” delves into themes of nihilism, addiction, and the struggle to create art amidst chaos. It also reflects the personal turmoil and recovery experienced by the Rays. Sam overcame a rare lung disease, while Kitty learned to manage a chronic illness––events that inform the record’s emotional depth.
The album merges Teen Suicide’s emotive punk roots with a grander rock sound, drawing inspiration from iconic bands like Pixies, Radiohead, and Melvins. Exuding the band’s signature voice, the music strikes a balance between their scrappy origins and a more expansive sonic landscape.
This album signals a pivotal moment for Teen Suicide as they seek to surpass previous works and expand their artistic horizons. According to Kitty, their objective is clear: “When a crowd sings along with you, those words have power. If they resonate with something real, that’s the ultimate achievement.”
In essence, “Spiders” and “Nude Descending Staircase Headless” exemplify Teen Suicide’s evolution, merging raw emotion with polished soundscapes while beckoning listeners into a fervent musical journey.
