Thomas Dollbaum Reveals Upcoming Album ‘Birds Of Paradise’
In the previous year, MJ Lenderman teamed up with Katie and Allison Crutchfield to form the band Snocaps. Lenderman, known as a prominent indie rock guitar virtuoso, surprising everyone by taking on the role of drummer in Snocaps. His foray into drumming is not just a passing phase as he continues to explore this side of his musical talent. Today, singer-songwriter Thomas Dollbaum, originally from Tampa and now based in New Orleans, unveils his latest album titled Birds Of Paradise. This album was a collaborative effort that saw Lenderman, the skilled drummer, contributing his talents to the music. Dollbaum’s journey to becoming a musician is quite unique. He relocated to New Orleans to pursue a master’s degree in poetry and is currently working as a carpenter in the vibrant city. His musical path began with the release of his debut album Wellswood in 2022, followed by the Drive All Night EP the following year. Dollbaum’s vocal style can be described as a high-pitched, emotionally expressive delivery with a distinct twang reminiscent of Jeff Mangum. For Birds Of Paradise, Dollbaum brought together a talented group of musicians including Lenderman, multi-instrumentalist Josh Halper, and Nick Corson from the Convenience. The recording process took place over four days at Dial Back Sound in Water Valley, Mississippi, under the guidance of producer/engineer Clay Jones. Lenderman’s presence is felt throughout the album as he showcases his skills on drums, percussion, and provides backing vocals. One of the standout moments on the album is his rugged yet poignant guitar solo on the lead single “Dozen Roses.” The track delves into themes of loss and nostalgia with poignant lyricism, “When you were a kid, the whole world felt like a lonesome ocean, closing in with every wave that seems to come your way. I look now, and it’s just tide pulled out of motion. A couple walks and then a dozen roses on their way.” Dollbaum explains that “Dozen Roses” serves as the second part to the album’s opener “Visitation,” setting the tone for the record’s exploration of themes such as “magical thinking” and introspection on memories. This track delves into the concept of time passing and the constant feeling of never having enough of it. Dollbaum emphasizes the album’s connection to the natural world and the enchantment it embodies. The album Birds Of Paradise features a tracklist that promises a captivating listening experience, including titles such as “Rabbits,” “Waterbirds,” and “Scrub Jay.” Accompanied by a visually striking music video directed by Alluvial, “Dozen Roses” gives listeners a taste of what to expect from Birds Of Paradise. Scheduled for release on 5/22 through Dear Life, this album is poised to captivate audiences with its rich lyrical depth and musical prowess.
