gaged in a local music scene to being completely new and knowing nobody. However, from my interactions so far, the Rhode Island music scene has been welcoming and community-oriented with minimal ego. I have participated in multiple open mics and started to connect with fellow songwriters, who have all been approachable and friendly. The blend of influences among songwriters here is different from what I experienced in California, which has been a breath of fresh air. One logistical challenge I have encountered is the shortage of band rehearsal spaces, so when I form a new band, I will need to put in extra effort to find a place to practice.
In describing my sound, my aim is to create songs that will endure over time. I recognize that I cannot keep up with constantly changing trends or conform to every marker of authenticity within a specific genre. Typically, I write with the intention of being able to perform a song with just an acoustic guitar and my voice. I tend to gravitate towards alternative country or folk-rock genres. I enjoy incorporating elements from various genres to create something that sounds unique. While there are talented musicians who adhere to a traditional sound, I personally do not feel artistically fulfilled by imposing rigid guidelines on how I write or arrange a song. My upcoming album explores a range of styles from Southern rock to jangly indie rock to almost orchestral compositions. For me, the value lies in the substance of the songs rather than conforming to genre constraints.
Living in Westerly, it would be a dream to perform at venues like the United Theatre, which holds historical significance. Rhode Island boasts a plethora of historic venues that continue to operate, and I would love to contribute to their legacy. I also have a desire to play at the Uptown Theater and AS220 for their adherence to the do-it-yourself ethos. Having already experienced the open mic scene at Myrtle, I appreciate the inclusive and diverse atmosphere, and I hope to secure a regular gig there in the near future.
As for my performance at Perks and Corks, audience members can expect a fresh and captivating perspective on the local music scene. I infuse thoughtful lyrics and memorable melodies into each song. Just a few days before the show, I will be launching my third full-length album, “After the Dream, Before the Memories,” and I am excited to share many of those songs along with tracks from my existing repertoire. Perks and Corks has always provided a welcoming platform for me and many other local songwriters, and the venue exudes a great ambiance for discovering new music on a laid-back evening.
