Randy Blythe of Lamb of God Discusses New Album and Music as a Tool for Change
Lamb of God is gearing up to release their twelfth studio album, Into Oblivion, on March 13. The metal band from Richmond, Virginia, headed to Total Access in Redondo Beach to lay down their vocal tracks, following in the footsteps of legendary bands like Black Flag, Descendents, and Husker Du who recorded there decades ago.
Frontman Randy Blythe shared that the dominant theme of the new album revolves around the rapid deterioration of the social fabric in America. Taking charge of 75 to 80% of the album’s lyrics, Blythe delves into the current state of affairs in the country. Alongside Blythe, the band comprises guitarists Mark Morton and Willie Adler, bassist John Campbell, and drummer Art Cruz.
Randy Blythe, celebrating his 55th birthday this year, has a long history in the music industry. Starting out in the punk rock scene in the 1980s, Blythe even ventured into publishing a fanzine for a brief period in the 1990s. The singer poured his emotions into the recording process at Total Access, a studio that has welcomed numerous iconic punk and metal acts over the years.
Among the tracks on the upcoming album, “El Vacio” pays tribute to influential figures like writer Hunter S. Thompson and Dave Brockie from Gwar. Blythe found inspiration for this song by visiting Brockie’s grave at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond. Another track titled “Sepsis” showcases Blythe’s admiration for Nick Cave’s musical style in his vocals.
In addition to his music career, Randy Blythe has dabbled in non-fiction writing, with two of his books making it to the bestseller lists. Currently, Blythe is immersing himself in the world of fiction with a vampire novel that carries a strong undertone of social commentary.
Reflecting on the current musical landscape, Blythe acknowledged that challenging times often give rise to exceptional music. Despite the hardships encountered during the album-making process, Lamb of God believes in the power of their music to resonate with their audience.
Lamb of God will kick off their North American tour on March 17 at The Theater at MGM National Harbor in Maryland. To engage with fans ahead of the album launch, the band has arranged listening parties at more than 140 record stores across the country. Enthusiasts can stay updated on tour details and secure their copy of Into Oblivion through Lamb of God’s official website.
