Motorhead guitarist Phil Campbell dies at 64 following surgery
Renowned Motorhead guitarist Phil Campbell has tragically passed away at the age of 64 after a prolonged period of treatment in intensive care following a complex operation. The news of his passing was shared by Phil Campbell and The B*****d Sons, the band that included his sons Todd, Dane, and Tyla Campbell. Phil gained recognition for his notable stint as the lead guitarist of Motorhead, a role he held from 1984 until the band disbanded in 2015 following the death of the founder, Lemmy.
The announcement was posted on the band’s Instagram page along with a picture of Phil with his wife Gaynor. In the statement, Phil’s family expressed their deep sorrow as they shared that he had passed away peacefully. He was described as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather known affectionately as ‘Bampi’. The message also conveyed that Phil’s music, legacy, and the memories he created will continue to endure.
Touching tributes poured in from fellow musicians and admirers in the comments section. Guitarist Chris Caffery, who had the opportunity to share the stage with Motorhead, expressed his profound sadness at the news. He shared cherished memories and thanked Phil for his inspiration and friendship. Another guitarist, Alex Skolnick, fondly remembered Phil for his on-stage presence and off-stage humor.
Phil’s musical journey began in Pontypridd, where he fell in love with music at a young age, starting to play the guitar at just 10 years old. Influenced by rock icons like Jimi Hendrix, Tony Iommi, and Jimmy Page, Phil’s passion for music led him to perform semi-professionally with a cabaret group called Contrast at the age of 13. Eventually, he co-founded Persian Risk before joining Motorhead in 1984.
Together with Michael “Würzel” Burston, Phil solidified his place in Motorhead, turning the band into a quartet. Phil spent over three decades as the band’s guitarist until their disbandment in 2015. Following this, he formed a band with his sons, Phil Campbell And The B*****d Sons, delivering four albums and releasing a solo project in 2019. Unfortunately, due to health concerns, the band had to cancel their headline performance at Takedown Festival.
The music world has lost an irreplaceable legend in Phil Campbell, whose guitar playing and contributions to the industry will be remembered for generations to come. His impact on fans, fellow musicians, and the rock genre at large is immeasurable, and his legacy will continue to live on through his music and the memories he created.
