Shape Navigator has been active in the music scene for quite some time, with Coyte starting his recording career under this alias back in 1994 on Guerilla Records. Some of the releases under this name include “Summer’s Promise,” “Crystallize/Phoenix,” “Solar/Jupiter,” and the track “Oracle” on the “Survival 2000” compilation. His versatility extends beyond Shape Navigator, having collaborated with Coldcut, Seal, David McAlmont, Heartless Crew, and Salena Godden. Coyte has also delved into composing for various mediums such as film, theatre, dance, and installation projects.
Recently, Shape Navigator contributed to the Coastal Electronauts compilation “Vol 1” in 2024 with the track “Aramaic Hymn.” Following this, the single “Sternenabfall” was released in January 2026, leading up to the full-length debut album “Journal” in February 2026. This album encapsulates nine unique tracks that showcase Coyte’s creative vision and experimental approach to music. Collaborations on this album include Martin Elliott on guitar and Helen Thomas on cello for the captivating piece “Margate – Blue Lights.”
The track “Norham Sunrise” from the album has received particular attention, with Coyte describing it as a representation of the intensity of sunlight, featuring recordings of distant pulsars and field recordings from the Northumberland coastline.
