Cheekface reveals upcoming album “Podium,” debuts new song “Black Site”
Last year, a podcaster labeled Cheekface as “the most irritating band in indie rock right now.” Embracing this description, the LA trio is confidently venturing into their latest musical chapter. Recently, they released a new single titled “Hostile Street,” blending bass-heavy beats with whimsical synths, showcasing their signature talky, neurotic-comedic rock style. This track served as a teaser for their upcoming album, Podium, set to be released in July.
With the announcement of their new album, Cheekface has also dropped another track. “Black Site” heavily incorporates cowbell, surfy guitar tones, and a jittery new wave bassline, drawing comparisons to the stylings of the B-52s. Greg Katz cleverly weaves references to the Killers and Pavement with the lyric “I got soul, but I’m not Korea/ Korea Korea Korea Korea.” This track is packed with memorable lines like “I was just thriving/ I was literally just thriving/ Before all this happened” and thought-provoking questions such as “If you’re the last to leave will you blow out the burning flags/ If you’re the last to leave would you put out the burning bill of rights.”
The overall atmosphere of these new songs can be summed up as a feeling of “It’s the end of the country as we know it, and I feel fine.” Experience the tracks “Black Site” and “Hostile Street” below.
